I do believe this was the first portrait made of Queen Mary on becoming Queen. Perhaps we could identify all jewels worn here.

RE - I agree that it is very alike. Have now found another dated 1910. It does look like mourning in both of my pics. She also wears the Women of Hampshire pendant brooch on the centre of her sash. It is unclear what happened to this long diamond sautoir of small stones. My personal belief is that it was this sautoir that was reset in 1928, to include the large diamonds from the Grand-Duchess Vladimir's diamond Riviere, to create 'Queen Mary's Diamond Sautoir' (as featured in Roberts). Hope that helps Nellie. Mary in her finest day wear, even with the rarity of the broad riband of the V&A. (but we deserved it for the grand opening of our first Parliament. I was at the Royal Exhibition a few weeks ago for the Vintage Expo and could just imagine them there today. Such a stunner of a venue. That is 'Queen Adelaide's Brooch' (previously referred to as The William IV brooch. I will try and hunt them down to find them for you. Although I have in no count that it is 'Queen Adelaide's Brooch', in the images you kindly posted, one can clearly make out the central diamond cluster, and one can just about make out the surrounded six diamonds. (Although admittedly the shadow on the brooch does make it hard to immediately work out). Thank you. I have always found that QAd/WIV brooch hard to detect. It seems to take on many different guises. Are the diamonds all old cut? (I'll check Roberts.) By the way, the bookshop where I first ordered the QD has not yet received the shipment! I was right to turn elsewhere with my order! I don't believe that it is possible to truly identify which collet necklace this is, without looking at the various jewellery inventories and tracking which diamonds rivieres were given to Princess Margaret at different times. What we do know is that Queen Mary had 8 diamond collet necklaces at the time of her death in 1953; of which he left one, 'Queen Mary's Lady Mount Stephen Necklace' to Princess Margaret (which was subsequently sold at auction). As for Princess Margaret's second collet necklace, now worn by Lady Sarah. This could well have been another bequest from Queen Mary, or perhaps a bequest from George VI, or a gift at some point from Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother; or indeed a gift from The Queen. Yes. Pearl necklaces are almost impossible to trace, no doubt even with the inventories; as they are restrung so often, as fashions change so do the length of the strands, the number of strands and the style of the clasps; that in the end, the same pearls are unrecognisable. Especially in the Windsor collection, where there are just so many different pearl necklaces for the ladies to chose from and wear. The waist brooch I tried to start a discussion about long ago. This is Q Victoria's brooch p 20 Menkes there is a picture. This link has HRH's speech. I had not realised the occasion was not that long after the death of Queen Victoria. And the Marquis of Linlithgow was Governor General. Now I understand why his equestrian statue is in such a prominent position in St Kilda Rd. Perhaps we should offer it to Canberra! Yes - surely she is that child. Anyway I have now found the photo. It is only because of the white sash of the Royal Order of Victoria and Albert that we can pick out HRH THe Duchess of Cornwall and York. And she pressed an electric button that started a message sent back to King Edward VII. And I had the concert playing in the background. Shortly we will have another episode of The Diamond Queen. Joye- I do not think it is the brooch Queen Victoria wore in Menkes, page 20. The brooch is a round pearl and diamond cluster brooch. (Also in Fields, 1987, p. 118-119) This eventually went to the Queen Mother. I think the brooch is the oval one pictured as No. 8. This is listed by Fields as Queen Alexandra's baroque pearl brooch in p. 134 (I use the 1987 version). You bring a lot of thought and knowledge to this forum. You have a greater knowledge, in particular, regarding the British Royal Family's jewellery collection than I so it's a pleasure to read your posts. I definitly took interest in the Jubilee celebrations in recognition of the Queen's role as Queen of Australia, first and foremost. I was also discussing with a relation over the weekend that one downfall of being an antipodean Monarchy is that we are unable to celebrate alongside our head of state in person, which would have been just wonderful. I enjoyed watching all the events live on Sky24 and found the coverage plentiful though the commentary was not to my liking. Can I ask Nellie, what are these episodes you speak of re The Diamond Queen? I have not seem nor heard of them but would very much like to watch them. I'm not surprised that Australian TV is slow on the uptake. ABC was itself pressured into televising the Jubilee after a backlash. RE

Thanks for that. I turned it on just as it had finished but thankfully the link works and I'll start watching episode one momentarily. I don't think Australia has had a state portrait since 2002 but I've not even seen that one displayed anywhere. Infact, I've only ever seen a small photo of it online. I don't understand this apparent need to officialy distance/remove all symbolic imagery of our sovereign to the point that it has now become near extinct. I find it insulting. There should have been a Jubilee photographic portrait comissioned and hung in Federal Parliament at the very least. RE
