Nellie, Fields page 20 last paragraph says brooch presented 1960 when The Queen opened the Queen's Bridge in Perth Scotland. Brooch is miniature flower bouquet with 7 amethysts buds surrounded by white and yellow gold ferns and grasses with central group of 12 freshwater mauve tinted pearls from River Tay.
I think this mauve outfit, one of the lovliest The Queen wears.

I actually believe that this is a totally different brooch to the one described in Fields. This one does not have any pearls, nor is it a bouquet, it is more of a floral spray, what's more, the brooch described by Fields doesn't contain diamonds, just different coloured golds.
I believe this to be a completely different brooch, the origins of which are unknown, I have called this brooch 'The Queen's Amethyst Spray Brooch'.
I don't believe we have ever seen a picture of the Queen wearing the brooch described in Fields.

I think it is a totally different brooch as the number of amethysts are the only similar thing to Fields description.
- in this brooch the amethysts acts as the centre of flowers not buds.
- in this brooch there are no pearls, the brooch Field described contains pearls
- this brooch contains diamonds, The brooch Field describes doesn't mention diamonds.
- this brooch is a floral spray, not a bouquet (if you compare Field's use of the description bouquet, she uses it connected to brooches that are clusters of flowers, like 'The Queen's Flower Basket Brooch'' not long floral sprays)
- also I don't see any ferns in this brooch, just diamond set leaves (what's more, as mentioned above, Field describes the ferns as being of different coloured golds, here these leaves are diamond set)
Which I believe makes it pretty conclusive that the brooch Field describes is a wholly different one that we have just never actually seen.

I had a feeling the brooch might have been the Queen Mother's and searched my images very quickly but did not find it.

I have a newspaper cutting from that actual day and it describes the brooch as "12 Tay pearls in a bouquet of ferns and grasses set off with amethyst stones."
So I agree, I see no sign of 12 pearls (that were local so would feature prominently) nor ferns and grasses.

In addition to the original question about the provenance of this amethyst brooch, another question, then, is whether the Queen has ever worn the Bridge brooch with freshwater pearls from the river Tay. Perhaps during a visit to Perth?
I have found pictures from the previous visit to Perth, in 2005, when her Majesty wore the frosted sunflower brooch.
There was also a visit in 1977, but the pictures I have are not good enough to se the brooch.
Another visit is scheduled during Holyrood week this year. Perhaps the brooch will be un-dusted for that visit.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited Perth and Dundee 19 May 1977. According to the Court Circular, they visited the District Council Chambers, the St. Johnīs kirk, the Bellīs sports centre, and were entertained to luncheon at Perth Technical College.
I have found no other visit to Perth, but I assume there must have been a visit during Holyrood week in the 80s and/or 90s.
The 1960 visit was the first visit of a reigning monarch to Perth since visit by George V pre WWI btw.
