Margaret Rhodes

I just finished reading Margaret Rhodes' book, The Last Curtsy and in her story, she mentions attending a State Banquet for the King of Malaysia shortly after joining her aunt's household and mentions Queen ELizabeth the Queen Mother leant her one of her tiaras for the occasion. It made me wonder if there have been any recent examples of royal tiaras being "leant out" and worn by someone other than their owner (aside, of course, from tiaras regularly rotated amongst different members of the same family). There is THIS photo of Reg Wilcock posing with Queen Elizabeth's lotus tiara after the Linley wedding, but any others? I think I'm going to write to Mrs. Rhodes. Hopefully she'll be able to share which tiara she wore. lol

In 1960 a young Savoy Princess wore a Belgian tiara during the weddingballs of HM King Boudewijn & HM Queen Fabiola.

Several relatives have borrowed Danish tiaras. Princess Märtha of Sweden (later Crown Princess of Norway) borrowed the turquoise bandeau from then Crown Princess Ingrid of Denmark (later Queen Ingrid) for a family wedding in the 1920s. The same tiara was also lent to another lady I cannot remember. Princess Eugenie of Greece borrowed a Danish tiara for the wedding of Princess Margrethe and Henri de Monpezat. Prince Henri´s mother has also borrowed tiaras from her daughter-in-law when attending events in Denmark. --Previous Message-- : Wasn't she wearing tiaras that belonged to : Danish nobility? :

I always thought this was the scroll/halo tiara worn by the Countess of Strathmore to the 1937 coronation. If so then it was lent by Queen Elizabeth (QM) to her mother for the occasion.

Very interesting. Does seem like this lady would have had her own tiara(s), though, doesn't it? This looks like it has a wide base. Trememdous family resemblance between mother and daughter! Wonderful to see this photo. Thank you.

HRH Princess Theodora of Greece wore also the Turquoise Bandeau Tiara. The mother-in-law of HRH Princess Beneditke of Denmark wore also the Turquoise Tiara.

At the wedding of Princess Benedikte of Denmark and Prince Richard in 1968 the maternal grandmother of Prince Richard, Madeleine Tengbom borrowed the turquoise bandeau. Princess Désirée of Sweden also borrowed the turquoise bandeau for one event in Stockholm in 1960s. I've never seen this picture before. Thanks for posting, Nellie! Something about the size and shape of this tiara reminds me of Princess Anne's mystery tiara. It doesn't remind me at all of the scroll tiara/halo tiara that Catherine Middleton wore for her wedding. I agree with the two tier idea but was this mystery tiara assumed to be part of the Greville bequest? Is so, 1937 would be too early for this appearance on the Countess of Strathmore. Let's not forget when, in Athens during the Greek dinasty Centennial celebrations in 1963, one evening Queen Ingrid appeared wearing Queen Frederica's best diamonds tiara, the one that recently reappeared (during HM Queen Margrethe II's 40th Anniversary on the throne).

I don't believe there has been any evidence to prove that 'Queen Elizabeth's Double Meander Tiara' was or was not part of the Greville bequest, as the full list of the over 60 pieces has never been published. All that is known about this piece is that it was owned by Queen Elizabeth, and was loaned by her to the Goldsmith Hall 'Modern Jewellery' exhibition in 1961.
