A lost jewel

I came across this information and picture about the Opal necklace that was given to Queen Elizabeth II in 1954 by the Australian people. While I accept that it is not to everyones taste it is a shame that the stone cannot be reworked into a stunning brooch to add to HM Australian collection. (Mind you, I think the necklace would look stunning on Catherine)!

That's why I reckon a brooch would be the way to go with a nice lacey border of diamonds. The sapphire brooch that the Queen Mum gave to Diana was similar in size & shape. Just noticed that HM also wore the Cambridge Tiara to this event. I would split the opal in 2, one as a pendant and the other one replace in the design of the necklace and put the necklace on a frame, to wear as tiara.

I would mount the opal as the top of a pretty little box, and convert the rest of the necklace to a tiara, perhaps with interchangeable centers in different colored stones. Nice for one of the princesses. jinja

Not only is Diana's future tiara visible, but so is her father, over the Queen's left shoulder. And it's a frightening look at what that long tour did to the Queen; she looks emaciated. jinja

Wymanda - i hope you don’t mind if I extend your thread to show the range of tiaras the Queen took on her Commonwealth Tour in 1954. Today I would think such a treasure trove of tiaras and necklaces would not be allowed to leave home all together and for so long! The Coronation Gown travelled as well and was worn many times for Parliamentary occasions.

Great collection of pics, Nellie. Three of the four tiaras worn during the tour had just been inherited from Queen Mary a few months before the Queen's departure. This is purely speculation, but I suspect that had she been alive Queen Mary would have given her granddaughter jewels for the tour, just as she had done with the Delhi Durbar tiara years earlier.

An Opal Parure?

Seems to me that there may be enough opals languishing in the vaults to make a parure. Was it Queen Mary or Queen Alexandra who disliked opals? I have vague recollections of opals being removed from the Oriental Tiara, possibly a gold tiara of Queen Victoria's, and possibly also a necklace. If opals were removed from those items, perhaps there were more pieces altered. I don't think it has anything to do with "not being allowed" to take so many jewels out of the country. I think it's all down to a change of fashion that HM doesn't wear as many grand jewels these days. Plus of course, she does not - at her age - do those long tours any more. My thinking on this topic has always related to risk and security considerations that exist today and were never even imagined way back then. I doubt that those jewels are insured because the premiums would be prohibitive so it is unlikely that there would be insurers to throw a fit! But I do believe that many "advisers" would recommend taking less these days. This was made for Queen Victoria with opals. Queen Alexandra switched them to rubies. It would be interesting to know what jewels were to make the tour if it had proceeded in 1952. Since Granny was alive and Elizabeth was a princess, obviously much less. But one would think the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara went along, and a nice diamond necklace or two. We know the flame lily brooch was with her, since she wore it when she returned to England. By 1953-54, the Queen was living for six months in her southern Commonwealth countries, and she took much that she would have worn at home. With a ship and a royal train for travel, her property (some of it held for all queens) could be kept safe. The diamond diadem did not leave Britain. I wonder whether the wedding to which Queen Mary wore it in Berlin was its only journey abroad. The Delhi Durbar tiara also stayed home, perhaps because of its Empire associations. The tiaras and major necklaces the Queen wore were personal jewels rather than official ones. The coronation necklace suggested her official role as monarch, along with the coronation gown. Were there by then Australian and New Zealand brooches in the Queen's collection? She no doubt received some along the way. jinja

The Queen has received some exotic gifts! They must make fascinating exhibits. I wonder whether she has ever worn the cute porcupine brooch. It occurs to me, in thinking about the tiaras she took along on the 1953-54 tour, that the Queen established then what her favorite jewels for evening would always be. Except for the Diana tiara, she still wears those tiaras frequently, and the same is generally true of the necklaces. There had really not been time since the death of Queen Mary and the Coronation for her to choose her favorites and wear them frequently at home; it was done for that trip. jinja

Yes - very different times. As I review all my 1954 pics I am struck every time by the way the royals, and travelling courtiers, dressed up to the hilt!! The colonials (!!!!) expected the works - well, the officialdom organising everything did - and so the show got on the road (by ship). So many pics show the Queen and her ladies in full "evening" dress in the heat of the day. Someone cut the Queen's hair very short during the tour. Like the jewels, that also set her pattern for the future, though it was a trip to Canada (I think when she opened the St. Lawrence Seaway) that inspired her hairdresser to get rid of the part and style the top of her 'do' as it is now, with symmetrical waves above her face. She had to keep the profile look for the stamps and currency, but she did manage to get her curls from the 1940s to the very early 1960s, and there they have stayed ever since. Perhaps wearing Queen Mary's tiaras in 1954 inspired the shorter cut, or perhaps it was the heat. jinja

Many of the gowns were worn again on return home, of course. You might be able to identify the colours that way, because not all were in white. And the Queen wore some strapless gowns when an event did not require badges and sashes to be worn. There were a few such events! I will review my souvenir books and see if there is more. In that era I don't think a young woman would put her hair up until marriage. Too sophisticated. There were cute customs to keep the ladies in their places!! But I cannot recall any pic where the Queen has her hair up. The 53-54 tour can also be studied for all the necklaces and brooches worn. Even her fringe necklace appeared. A big thank you Nellie for the work in finding these stunning photos and sharing. To me, the Queen was at her most glittering on the 1954 tour, the likes of which we haven't really seen since. Don't get me wrong, HM is always gorgeous on formal occasions, but the gowns and jewels on the early tour were magnificently over the top. It was a major event lasting six months. Perhaps Hartnell was responsible for most gowns. I don't recall. It seems the planners were trying to bring as much majesty as possible to the rest of the Commonwealth who could not be present for the celebrations of the Coronation in London. If you leave Queen Elizabeth II in the Search box and add one capital city at a time, that produces some good results: Adelaide Melbourne Hobart Perth Brisbane Sydney Canberra Darwin If you use only Queen Elizabeth you will get the Queen Mother as well, who visited many times. Not sure about the fuzzy. Have never bought any. Trove is on the NLA (National LIbrary of Austalia) site but it draws from many other libraries, mainly the State Libraries. Perhaps for a photo you really like you could try the other library site direct. On browsing the Trove link I gave before - http://trove.nla.gov.au/picture/result?q=queen+elizabeth+II+evening&l-availability=y&l-format=Photograph I found the Queen in 1988 riding in the Australian State Coach in Canberra. I had no idea that the Queen had ridden in it before it was shipped to the UK.
