Do you suppose the Royal Family could respectfully request that places they visit make a donation in lieu of expensive jewelry (of which they have plenty)? Just curious. Well, gifts from a private person are different I think. When a person marries or someone dies, often the families ask that donations and gifts be made to various charities. It can also provide a possible tax write off. In the case of someone like Queen Charlotte, she requested her her private gifts of jewels be sold to provide her daughters with income. That I can understand. My husband, after years of using simple and inexpensive wedding bands I bought at a discount store, started to buy me each year a splendid piece of jewelry. First a 1 carat diamond solitaire and then a 3 carat solitaire. At that point I thought "what the heck, should I wear BOTH when I am cleaning, washing, walking and cleaning up after dogs, digging in the garden, watering the lawn, shoveling snow or cleaning out the fish pond???? Now that I think about it, maybe I DO deserve the jewelry for all the work I do. But no, I told him I would rather have a set sum to donate to Animal rescue every month. He decided it was a heck of a lot cheaper!!! So said "Fine!!" I do have a son who will marry some day but let HIM work hard like his father and buy his wife her jewelry. The Dutch Royal House has created two separate legal entities for these gifts. This means that not a natural person but the legal entity, the foundation, is the owner of these gifts. These foundations are exempted from inheritance rules and succession taxes as non-natural persons can not die. Foundation Official Gifts of the House Orange-Nassau Founded 2007 Chair: H.R.H. The Prince of Orange Registration Number 27309679 Purpose: "To collect, maintain and manage properties which were offered to Her Majesty Queen Wilhelmina or are or will be offered to a descendant of the beforementioned or to a spouse of a descendant of the beforementioned". The Foundation can not sell or dispose in another way the properties placed into its ownership. Foundation Royal Gifts Founded 2007 Chair: H.M. The Queen Registration Number 27309706 Purpose: "To collect, maintain and manage properties which were or are offered to the bearer of the Crown of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the framework of the functioning as head of state of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, or are offered for the occasion of a State Visit, an Official Visit or another event". The gifts are very diverse. At almost every visit, be it a State Visit, an official visit, a working visit or even a private visit, gifts are offered. This varies from a commemorative book to a nice crystal vase, from a set of silver items to a ring with "dust from space" (a Dutch astronaut gave it). During royal weddings gigantic loads of gifts are delivered at the palace, varying from a complete dinner set for 100 people to an extended set of damast linen, from specially re-purchased historic items to newly created art sculptures. The amount is often unbelievable. And maybe also jewels, although it looks like the Dutch royals prefer less ostentatious gifts. I think the two foundations were set up as result of the deaths of Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard in 2004. A massive amount of never-ending items left the depôts of the royal residences, had to be classified, valued, catalogued, stored. There were four daughters who could inherit from Queen Juliana and six daughters who could inherit from Prince Bernhard. After all the dividing and distributing, still an immense amount of goods was left, amongst these surprisingly expensive and beautiful gold-, silver-, crystal- and porcelain ware, antique furniture, paintings, objets d'art and name these all. These were auctioned for the benefit of charities chosen by the four daughters. I have the idea that by creating these two foundations, the problem "what to do when royal X or royal Y dies" is tackled. Everything is placed in the ownership of a Foundation and this means that as long as the Foundation exists, the (future) bearer of the Crown and/or his House has the usufruct and the pleasure of all these gifts.

I hope I have it right but I believe the foundations are family ones. Everything is very much for the family only. Not for the monarchy or the State. I also think the British royal family might have similar family trust setups but they are private. And will remain private.

I agree - they are too flashy and not very creative or beautiful or subtle. There is quite a lot of jewelry made with modest and/or semi-precious stones which is exquisite in its workmanship.
