There's a debate on Facebook (Royal Jewels Fan Club) about the diamond tiara worn by the princess on each royal events for many years. Is it a Greek royal family heirloom, since I can't find any picture of her mother the Queen Anne-Marie wearing it ? Or was it purchased ?

I had read that it was a gift to her on her 18th birthday - not sure from whom. But I could be repeating incorrect information. That ruby and diamond bow brooch was a wedding present from Queen Ingrid. Thanks Clemetine for the lovely picture of Princess Alexia. The information I have is that this tiara was an 18th anniversary gift from her parents and was purchased for her. I have no information on the jeweler that made it, nor if it was new or purchased on an auction of classical jewels. I find it a lovely classical style diamond tiara for a young princess. I always wonder why the King and Queen never did the same for their youngest daughter Princess Theodora. Although she has far diferent interests than attending galas, she did had to borrow the danish turquoise tiara from her aunt recently. There seems to be a lack of smaller tiaras for the younger princesses. I will assume that Princess Marie Chantal will wear the fabulous diamond tiara of Queen Sophie on grand ocasions from now on, and her own fringe tiara for lesser ocasions. Princess Alexia has her own tiara. So, Princesses Theodora, Tatiana and the future wife of Prince Philipos will have to share the corsage tiara or borrow some from aunt Margareth... Princess Alexia has worn the antique corsage tiara at least once as a young princess. Does anybody here know when this pic was taken? And when did she wear her own tiara for the first time? I had so much hoped that both Tatiana and Theodora would attend the 40th jubilee celebrations in Denmark. It would have been very interesting to see which tiaras they would have worn.

The occasion when this photo was taken was the 1986 State visit of the Spanish Royal couple to London. It was during the second official evening during the state visit, at the Spanish Embassy. I remember vividly the gorgeous ¡HOLA! coverage of the event.

I do not remember seeing Pr. Irene of Greece at that event. I remember that HM Queen Anne-Marie did not attend because she was in the last days of her pregnancy, few days later in fact she gave birth to Prince Philippos of Greece. A big disappointment of that visit was that Queen Sofia, who apparently was not yet in possession of her second grand tiara, the Cartier diamonds and pearls tiara, had to attend both the official evening at Buckingham Palace and the second one at the Spanish Embassy, wearing the Ansorena fleur-de-lys tiara. She had already worn the Mellerio waves pearls and briolettes diamonds tiara at the formal ceremony with the Lord Mayor. Then, the Infantas Elena and Cristina, who also attended the Spanish Embassy evening, wore respectively the Franco floral diamonds tiara and the Empire diamond tiara, today mostly worn by Princess Letizia. Of course there was still the Niarchos rubies & diamonds parure as a diadem to be worn, not to say anything about borrowing the Countess of Barcelona's tiara, in those years used mainly by the Infanta Maria Pilar, or Princess Irene little circle diamond tiara. It's very rare that a Queen is obliged to wear twice in a row the same tiara during a state visit. Mind you, it is not a critic to Queen Sofia, I think this decision was made just to keep her low profile, that it is often her trademark, and that's why we all love the Queen of Spain. : : : :

In a "Point De Vue" issue some time before Prince Nicholas and Tatiana's wedding I saw an article about the probable tiaras that could be worn by the future bride. Among all the well known options of tiaras used by Greek Royal Princesses, such as the Khedivé tiara, the corsage pearls and diamond tiara but also the "disappeared" diamonds tiara (recently reappeared)and.....the little diamonds stars tiara used several times by Princess Catherine of Greece, Lady Brandran, and maybe by Princess Irene? Here is the only two photos I have of this stars tiara (on the right of the photo):

It seems that the small circle diamond tiara from Queen Sophie might have been inherited by Princess Irene, logical since her older sister Sofia was presented with the prussian tiara and the grander jewels went to the Queens. Princess Irene seems to own two tiaras: the circle tiara and the diamond and pearl necklace/tiara. I found this picture of her and Sofia both in eveningwear. I remember seing this picture some time ago and thinking that perhaps Princess Irene's tiara was an edited image... There is something odd with that tiara and how it is placed in the hair...That seems like a fringe tiara, I really don't remember any fringe tiara in the greek collecion (apart from Princess Marie Chantal's recent tiara of course). do we know when the photo was taken? there are 4 years of age between Sofia and Irene... and most royals do not wear a tiara before the 'coming of age'... so if Sofia is 20 or 21 in this photo then Irene is 16 or 17 years old, and thus not old enough to wear a tiara... then it could be some kind of head ornament (in fabric? perhaps) in the shape of a kokoshnik...

That would be wonderful! But it's still 10 long years till then. There will also be the Golden Wedding in 2017. I noticed that the Berleburgs often attend events in full force, while there are always some of their Greek cousins missing. The Berleburgs live closer, and are often in Denmark, while the Greek children have to travel from further away.
