I didn't speak only about the Red Cross Ball, but about all the big events she attended for one year. Between the visit of a school and an State dinner in Berlin, it seems to me that a difference has to be made with the jewels we wear. With Charlene I would even say that more the event is important, less the jewels are present ! Let's be honest, what can be the reasons? - She has lost the key of the safe (dixit Glenn)? - She has sold her jewels to make some money ? - Her skin is allergic to the gold and to the platinum ? - The economic crisis and the poverty are so important in Monaco that Prince Albert has suggested to his wife not to shock the opinion with her jewels ? - She always chooses sparkling gowns which don't need to wear any jewels ? - She thinks that jewels are for the old ladies who want to make their wrinkles forget ? I'm sorry, but the last one remains the less fanciful for me

We see several royals showing themselves publicly in H&M and Zara clothing. And often with a minimum of glitter, if any, around their necks. A Spanish couple cancelling their wedding anniversary (...or did an elephant in Botswana get in the way??). I just think they have intuition and understood how to act in time of crisis.

A reality may have to be faced that not everyone enjoys wearing tiaras, she may be one of those people. There are some tiaras that can be uncomfortable to wear....if you have been wearing them for awhile you can get used to it...Princess Charlene has not. She also may not be used to wearing such fantastic jewels...can anyone here put on, say, the Fife Tiara and wear it like a pro (for want of a better way to put it). Hard as it is to believe, some women just aren't into jewelry and Charlene may be one of those women. I've read that Queen Elizabeth doesn't care that much for jewelry and sees the tiaras, brooches, bracelets as being "part of the job". Before her engagement and marriage, Charlene didn't wear much jewelry, if any at all. I have to agree with Clementine's criticism that Albert II and Charlene are not exactly showing themselves as reigning sovereigns. In my view his white jacket on the tuxedo is even worse than her lack of jewels. The Rose ball has for years if not decades been a black tie event instead of a white tie one. This has resulted in the women of the family not wearing a tiara. As the new Sovereign Princess Charlene could have chosen a different set up but she hasn't. Unfortunately Monegask princely events have a higher new money glitz than a royal glamour appeal. Doesn't Charlene wear her wedding ring on her right hand? I think the princess looked lovely. The other pictures of women at the Red Cross Ball also show more flashy gowns than jewelry. Charlene was just back from the Olympics in London, and basically she dressed like the swimmer she is. With her sleek haircut and tailored clothing, she obviously thinks less is more! How nice if the Red Cross ball were white tie, it would be the one opportunity for Princess Stephanie to wear tiara. To compare HSH Princess Charlene to her mother-in-law is most unfair since Grace was the product of Hollywood glamour. Of course I would love to see HSH Charlene adorned with diamonds and tiaras. It's a different era.

Age does not matter. Etiquette for (demi)gala gives guidelines but (grand) jewellery is always 'optional'. This is also a nice escape for ladies whom simply do not have grand jewels or dislike to wear grand jewels to appear at an event. For the Red Cross Ball in Monaco I have never seen diadems in the past decades.

I think you overlooked a detail: it is not the princely court which sets the dresscode but the organizers of the event. The Prince and his spouse are guests of honour at a major event held in the Sporting Club de Monte-Carlo, no more than that.

It has nothing to do with poverty: even in the most booming 1990 there never were diadems at the Red Cross Ball. It is simply all about the dresscode set by the organization (La Croix-Rouge Monégasque): cravate noir, black tie. Sometimes the dresscode even is "The Roaring Twenties" or "Pirates". It is no official State Event or something like that, just a fancy fundraiser.

In answer to the query on Tiaras at the Red Cross Balls in Monarco. No, tiaras were never in evidence. The late Princess Grace wore extremely elaborate coiffeurs created by Parisian hairdresser Alexandre, in the 60's & 70's era. The August 1968 Ball is an excellent example.

I seem to recall Carioline in the late 80's or early 90's wearing what looked like a turquoise and diamond tiara (or head ornament) for this ball. Same event, similar series of photos , but here is a wide gold-like band on the ring finger of the left hand of the Princess. Mystery appearance ? Beautiful photos of the Grimaldi females, but.... when is a Tiara not a tiara? Each to their own opinion. Princess Caroline is not wearing a Tiara in the true description of what constitutes a tiara is she ? It is a hair ornament the same as Princess Charlotte is wearing this glorious borrowed piece as a hair ornament for her bridal headwear.

Indeed a matter of definition - I'd say the boundaries are fluent, as also seen for example on Queen Margrethe when she wear her floral tiara wrapped around her chignon instead of a 'strict' tiara way. I think some of these pictures have been reversed. Edit: In the Getty pictures, it appears that she wears the diamond bracelet on her right wrist, the gold ring on her left hand. That doesn't explain the bare hand and wrist in Clementine's photo, however.
