Princess Astrid’s gold orchid brooch and King Gustaf V’s 90th birthday gift

The Norwegian Royal Court published a photo of Princess Astrid when she turned 90 in February, wearing a gold orchid brooch. I wonder if it could have a Royal provenance. When King Gustaf V of Sweden turned 90 in 1948, he received an artwork of a gold orchid made of Venuzuelan mahogny from Swedish citizens living in Venezuela. Astrid’s orchid brooch looks like a replica of Gustav’s orchid gift (when you rotate the photo). I’m only guessing, but could the brooch be some kind of keepsake from King Gustaf’s 90th birthday? Astrid was only 16 years old in 1948, but she did attend her grand uncle’s celebrations and she has worn the gold orchid brooch since the 1950s. I recently noticed that Astrid also wore the orchid brooch when King Carl XVI Gustaf was received on his first State visit in 1974. What do others think?

It seems like Princess Margaret, countess of Snowdon, had a similar piece in her collection that was auctioned off in 2006 how to post pictures on forums

That would have been interesting to read, she has a very eclectic collection of Royal jewels at her disposal! Previous Message What an exciting find! It does look like there are more than one orchide brooch out there similar to this. So it is not possible to establish 100% that the brooch worn by Princess Astrid is the one gifted to King Gustav V. But it is an interesting prospect. Would it not be great to be able to read a memoire written by Princess Astrid where she reveal some more informatio about her jewels? She has experienced so much during her long life and she is a font of knowledge about the family history according to members of the Royal Family. It is probably just wishful thinking, but one is allowed to dream.

You missed out a few through her mother's line she descendants from Willem I of the Netherlands as well as his cousin and brother-in-law Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia and the previous kings of Prussia. That includes lines to George I of Great-Britain and his mother's Stuart descendant as well has his grandfather who was the Winter King of Bohemia. Frederik V of the Palatine had a Bourbon as his grandmother so he descended from Saint Louis, king of France. There is also a line through Carl of Sweden's mother Sophia of Nassau to Frederick I of Wurtemberg. Not to forget the lines of Hesse-Kassel, Nassau-Weilburg, Saxony-Altenburg, Oldenburg and no doubt countless others. Not being a fan of gold jewels myself i must say i like this one. Princess Astrid has a very interesting collection of jewels and for a younger daughter of a relatively new reigning dynasty she has a fairly large collection to boot. She has the turquoise set from her grandmother, the Vasa tiara from her mother, the gold set from Pauline of Nassau as well as the two versions of the hair ornament that in my view could be reshaped in a very attractive small diamond and ruby tiara. Indeed, another example from her collection: Princess Astrid has a gold mesh bracelet (she has several) with a diamond studded buckle. I have not found a match, but similar Victorian era bracelets have been worn by her British, Swedish and Danish relatives in the past.
