Upper Rogue River, Oregon. December's overnight temperatures have dropped down to where the early morning fog along the river freezes on all that it contacts.
The river flow has dropped down nicely to good flyfishing levels, but with the cold and low water there are not many fresh run fish moving up. Even the steelhead and coho that are already up into the upper Rogue River have seemingly disappeared. They're plain hard to find, catch and touch. I've found that going small with the fly will tend to stimulate some action. Again, the Bead Head G.R. Hare's Ear nymph is the fly I've been favoring. Here's a nice cutthroat trout from yesterday's frozen morning session on the Rogue.
