January is a fickle month on the Rogue River. Some seasons we don't see a fishable day. This past January had a few exception. Though the snowfall has been fairly light, Mt. Mcloughlin shines with the white stuff.

The fish movement into the upper Rogue has been very slow. I've ventured down into the middle Rogue to search for the advance guard of the winter fish.

Winter steelheading means bundling up and slinging roe. Here's an expert extending the drift of his bait. Looking good, Jon!

With water flows down for much of January, it's fairly easy to wade deep and cast the fly far.

So far catching of adult steelhead has been slow. There are days on the upper Rogue where you can connect with a good resident cutthroat or trout. Here is a good sized trout/smolt who attacked a Grey Heron Spey. Just watched a hatch come off the water a warm recent afternoon. It's time to start carrying along a light fly rod for the BWO action on the cutthroat and resident trout.
