Thursday was forecast to be cool, cloudy and a little rainy. The weekend is going to be hot and hot again. So I took advantage of Thursday to do a little hiking exploration of the Rogue. I walked in several miles to access a good chinook crossing bar. The Rogue's flow was high at about 3,500 CFS. Too high for the majority of spots, but not this location. The fish count is low for mid-May...something just under 1,000 chinook. The water temperature is good...48°...good for movement and bite, so you just never know. The hole and water looked good when I arrived. The bite was...trout...to my large G.R. Hare's Ear dropper.
I fished a new fly for salmon, a kind of dark, orange-legged Carpetbagger. You can see it sitting on the rock. I'll call it a Salmonbagger for now. When I catch a salmon with it the name will stick.
Glad I got out for the outing on Thursday. Today, Friday, the Rogue's water flow has increased by 1,000 CFS. That's a bit high, even for this spot. This weekend the weather is suppose to hold daytime temperatures over 90°F. I've got some other things to do. And I'll just wait for those chinook to arrive in numbers.
