Phil was the man who got me into radio.
I'll never forget my first year at Humber College in a media arts program and on a dare from a fellow female student to try out for an audition on the campus station. It wasn't long after that this very strange "old" man was following me through the halls and begging me to transfer to his new "first ever solely radio program" at an academic institution in Canada. I kept trying to dodge him for three weeks. Finally relenting I said okay.
I was the only woman of a class of 17 in that inaugural year.
I remember sleeping overnights on the floor of one of the studios trying to finish a project.
Also during the time I had the opportunity to be taught by some amazing people and always remembering how totally committed and enthusiastic Phil was about what he had accomplished.
I, fortunately (as odd as this sounds) never graduated from the 3 year program as I had the great pleasure of being a student allowed into program advisory committee meetings where I met Bob Laine.
The rest goes from there. I got an internship position at CHUM FM and from there a full time job first at 1050 CHUM, where I was grateful to have received a Canadian Music Industry Award and helped with the original production of "The History of Rock". Did the research and secured the rights to the music. Very satisfying to say the least.
From there it was onto CHUM FM for a long tenure and a few more accolades and the amazing privilege of working with some of the best talent in the business.
The program at Humber was a dream of Phils that came to fruition and has since nurtured many talented people over the years in our business.
Thank you Phil for the kind of world you opened up to me and my eternal thanks for making my everyday a wonderful experience.
God Rest Your Soul You Old Wise Man.
Love you to Bits.
