Chalk it up to the corruption of the English language -- especially in the U.S.
A particular pet peeve of mine that has crept into American English is the inaccurate expression of a fraction as a multiple.
Basically, they say "10 times less" when they should be saying "1/10th or 10% of". 10 times less would effectively render a negative amount.
I'm far from a paragon of virtue myself, but there comes a point where it becomes important to be understood. The language is starting to become very ambiguous.
