Hey Al et al.
One of my roles was to edit all of the Canadian currents down to 90 seconds in length, then from 11-midnight weekdays plus Sunday morning, the tracks would be jammed in in order to fit as many as possible. This allowed the station to play less Cancon elsewhere during the day. The Cancon was definitely ghettoized heavily.
Before my time, songs like 'Jubilation' by Paul Anka and 'Lookin' Out for Number One' by BTO, both with extended instrumental passages, were edited into TWO songs. One was the vocal and one was an instrumental, using a title similar to the original track (if I recall correctly, the BTO instrumental was 'Lookin' Out for Number Two').
There were several little tricks that, depending on which side of the fence you sat, were either ingenius or immoral.
