Posted by joshua The current line-up is perhaps one of the better ones in a long time. My impression is that a lot of the folks who are squawking about the death of the station would only be pleased if 'RB could be dropped into a time machine and rewound about 30 or 40 years. Time marches on and if you see that as unfortunate, then you may be deserving of pity. You can't live in perpetual adolescence for the rest of your life. It is rather regrettable that so many adults spend their years pining for their glory days rather than living for the 'now'. CFRB is a radio station, a part of Toronto culture, a staple in local media for many years and, clearly, serves as a mnemonic to many who listened during pivotal times in their own lives. It is also a business. CFRB - oops, I'm sorry, Newstalk - is also a business which has recently changed hands and exists within an industry that is evolving at an exponential rate. It's not a news business or an entertainment business anymore. It is just an information business. With information having become a commodity and with a public that has unprecedented access to information from all corners of our rapidly shrinking planet, services like the new Newstalk need to address that and serve as a filter for that information creating value for a shifting demographic. I think the re-branding efforts are positive and the new lineup is more than a few steps in the right direction for a station that has, frankly, been adrift for some time now. For those who are complaining on this board about the attention paid to CFRB lately, it seems to me that people wouldn't post if they didn't care. There really isn't much else that is of as much interest going on in the SOWNY area at the moment - if there were, it would pop up on the board as well. It sure makes for a pleasant break from posting links to obituaries for broadcasters from decades past. With all of that said, why shoot the station down before allowing the changes to play out? I hope I am going to enjoy the new lineup, but I am not going to cry over spilled milk. If I don't want to listen, I have other options on the dial and around the world with online broadcasts and podcasts. I wrote a review of each show on the CFRB schedule a while back and have been meaning to make a new one for ages, but frequent changes have made that impractical for a long time - I know everybody is going to have their own visceral response to anything, but taking the time to form a considered opinion is bound to be more constructive for everybody involved.

As a nearly daily listener of CFRB for nearly 20 years now, I have heard good and bad hosts, questionable experiments with syndicated programs, painful infomercials, rebroadcasts etc.
My review of the CFRB lineup from a few years ago…
