I was surprised to note several years ago that more and more FM stations are running directional patterns now. Some for obvious reasons like the lower powered campus stations sharing a frequency in Vancouver and Victoria.
But, here in Alberta, we are seeing some less obvious reasons. FM's that are licensed to communities surrounding large metros, but are not allowed to serve or sell to those metros. The latest example is the AM to FM flip of CFOK in Westlock, Alberta. They are asking for about 50KW, which they will need to adequately serve both Westlock and Barrhead with a transmitter in the middle. But they have a Figure 8 pattern with a gentle null towards Edmonton. And they seem to go out of their way to point out to the CRTC that even the fringe signal on their coverage map does not reach anywhere near Edmonton.
