Stations go all-Christmas for two reasons.
#1 reason is to capture the feel-good holiday music position before anybody becomes identified as the local “Christmas station.” We’ve already got a bunch of converts, even before Halloween, such as Walla Walla AC “Star 95.7” KKSR, Appleton’s AC “Bridge” WROE (94.3) and Green Bay’s AC “Breeze” WECB (104.3). Kurt Luchs at New Northwest Broadcasters’ KKSR explains the psychology – “It’s been a pretty tough year for many people, and with holiday music being like audio comfort food…we figured it would be nice to start Christmas a little early.” The #2 reason for going all-Christmas is more strategic than tactical – a format change is coming. It’s likely that the stations in Washington state and Wisconsin are returning to their AC formats on December 26.
But why would you go all-Christmas in October, on an urban contemporary station in St. Louis? Answer – because you’re blowing up the format. Here’s the story -
