Today, Rogers blew out Jack's airstaff in Vancouver, leaving only Larry and Willy in the morning. Mid morning host Pam Stevens and afternoon drive personality Kelly Latremouille were let go along with the promotions director for the station. Apparently, there will be no voices on the air after 10am save for recorded id liners.

This is pathetic. If they intend to permanently go with voicetracking exclusively outside the A.M. they should have their license revoked. There should be a minimum amount of live programming as a condition of license. The airwaves are public, a frequency is a privilege, and this is an abuse.

I believe the main reason for this change is a format change, what they come up with, will be interesting as every format is covered. All of the JACK formats, JOE formats are beginning to suffer. We all figured this novelty would end sooner or later, soon in some markets, later, in Vancouver's case. Why they decided to do this mid ratings, beats me, this should have been done before ratings. Depending on how many total people were let go, this savings would be a lot more than 100k. I assume they kept Larry & Willy (and thankfully they did, they have a great show that is workable on any format) because of some iron contracts which would cost them too much to get out of. Should be interesting to see what they do hear, unless they did some market research which found out listeners don't like announcers, which I never believable...yes listeners can get sick of announcers, but generally only certain ones...any format thoughts? Wonder if this will happen in Calgary. What's next, the BOB formats going jockless?

Crazy thought here... but what IF the listeners actually enjoy it more without announcers? We're all a bunch of radio people who hate change... I've seen alot of research that shows some JOCKS are a huge tune-out when following the PPM listening data. As an aside - people keep referencing KJR-FM in Seattle - YES it is a HUGE success - but there are other stations in the market that have jocks... maybe there is room for both? Giving listeners a choice is never a bad thing. Oh, and the amount ROGERS saves by cutting the jobs is not the point - it's the number they save X 15 (or more) - and that is the number that gets reflected on their EBITA which is how stations are measured in the real world.

While it doesn't seem to make much sense to have only a morning show the stations are most likely quite profitable. They stay in a market segment with a niche audience and all revenue is nearly 100% profit. Even after losing the announce staff the numbers don't decline severely. These days it isn't about the listener it's about the shareholder.

I believe the main reason for this change is a format change They're the #3 commercial station A25-54, and that's their single worst book. It's also a great PPM format. They're not going anywhere.

I made a mistake in my posting. It was my understanding that Kelly was Fred's son. He's actually Fred's brother. If you don't know who Fred is, he's a legendary Vancouver jock with a long history of entertaining the west coast. His brother had similar success in Halifax before moving to Vancouver a couple of years ago.

Having only a morning show then VT or whatever is hardly something new. Pelmorex was doing that 15 years ago when I was in North Bay. SOunded like crap with virtually ZERO local content other than news after 10AM.

From the Jacobs Media Blog: Jay = Jack? Jay Leno 2 There's been a lot of attention in recent weeks about NBC's new 10 p.m. entry, The Jay Leno Show. Aside from its prime time Monday-through-Friday time slot, the big news about the show is its cost. Specifically, the potential return on investment for the Leno prime time experiment is quite high, given that its production costs are exponentially lower than dramas, action shows, and even sitcoms. As the networks have learned with relatively cheap Reality TV shows, ratings aren't the only measure of success. The question now revolves around how large an expenditure is required in order to reap respectable audience levels. Thus, if the Leno show isn't an immediate winner in Nielsen, NBC may still claim victory because it's a much less expensive show to produce than other genres that may generate higher ratings. In some ways, it may be reminiscent to radio observers of the Jack-FM format, which is having impressive ratings success - especially in PPM markets - at a fraction of the cost of personality-intensive radio. Many managers and owners of these "variety" format stations are chest bumping each other, celebrating higher ratings and dirt cheap costs. But that's where the Leno analogy comes up short. While NBC may be spending much less money to produce the show, the content, personality, and unique value of Jay Leno make up the core of this show's intrinsic appeal. It's not bare bones, cheaply produced, or boring - nor will it be easy to copy. And as a pitchman, Leno has skills that will make sponsors a lot of money. For Jack-FM stations, enjoy the ratings while you can. As more and more Internet stations hit the market, and as access continues on smartphones and in cars, consumers will have many options beyond Jack that they can program themselves, without commercials. The smart ass voice in between songs will not save these stations from being replaced by sleeker, less cluttered streaming alternatives. And as advertising vehicles, the lack of notable, familiar personalities has always made these stations difficult to market to clients looking to generate foot traffic and ringing cash registers. The other interesting news about the Leno show is how it's being marketed. Happily, radio plays a starring role in promoting the 10 p.m. time slot (or 9 p.m. in the Central Time Zone). Working with the Katz Media Group and innovators like Bob McCurdy, a targeted campaign has been crafted to promote the start time by running commercials at "10 after" the hour (or "9 after"), even though it often means violating a station's clock architecture. This is another sign that the days of rate cards and traditional spot schedules are grinding to a halt. The leap of faith that always came with the 18-spots-a-week package has run out of air - and accountability. Today, advertisers are demanding more from their media dollars - creative solutions, integration, personality participation, and of course, results. Jay = Jack?

I never once stated that we shouldn't care if people lose their jobs. What I wrote is that as a radio listener if you don't like what you hear, why tune in? If you don't like the music, the comments, the commercials, etc....don't listen. Radio is free for you as a listener to listen to. When you turn on your radio in your car, you don't pay a cent. Why spend time complaining about something that for you as a listener is FREE? If I don't like something I hear...I turn it off...done. My television cable on the other hand...I pay for so therefore if I am not liking the programming I can complain because I am paying for the service. Bad food at a restaurant , sure I'll complain....again I am paying for it. Is this clear enough for you dial twister? I never once said we shouldn't care if people lose their jobs. Put your nose back in joint now.
