I read a lot of complaints from people who think radio has nothing to offer. People who think the good old days of radio are long gone and it will never be the same. Time and time again, folks quip about radio being repetitive. Same music, same humor, same potty jokes, same fill-in-the-blank. Whether it’s AC, (same music) news talk, (bad writing, irrelevant news, the list goes on) rock and alternative, (too many poop jokes) people seem to have something bad to say about radio. To those people: How do we fix it? What do you WANT to hear? What would YOU talk about? What would YOU play? What is your IDEAL radio station? How can we make radio something that people can’t say no to?

. . . it's Tuesday so from 4-6:00 I'll listen to Freddy Vette from CJBQ, then a 1-hour dinner break and from 7 - 10:00 its Johnny Maracca from 97.7 the Beach. Thx for asking.

Freddy Vette now starts at 3...an extra hour everyday. I'm thinking there's a chance that the country will soon be gone from CJBQ...except maybe the Classic Country Saturday/Sunday. All those oldies-style CJBQ jingles - did they get them made just for this one show??

Don't know. The man put an impressive pkge of creativity & energy into his 2-hour program. Hope it won't be diluted @ 3 hours. Have you checked out J. Maracca Tuesdays @ 7:00 from 97.7 the Beach yet, RM?

If you think his on-air persona is energetic, you should see his live performance.....which I did just over a week ago. Freddy leads an 8-piece 50's rock n' roll band that will knock your bobby-socks off. He sings, plays guitar, stand-up steel and the honky-tonk piano. When he gets to the point in the show where he's lying across the top of the piano and playing Jerry Lee Lewis songs "backwards-on-the-keyboard", while the entire audience is up dancing......well....you know you've been well and truly entertained. All that and his own daily 50's/60's rock n' roll program too. Not bad for a 37-year-old. Crazy, baby. Is that positive enough for ya, Larry?

Perhaps, for perspective's sake, it might also pay to realize that even the "good old days of radio" (or significant aspect thereof) might not cut the mustard with today's audiences. Like, listening to old airchecks and hearing how what once sounded so grand, now--with 2009 ears--sounds so transparently meagre...

. . . a drawback of phone request programs is that the same people often request common, frequently-heard tunes, just to hear their own voice on radio. Does Freddy have the cojones to say "NO" to them?

Thanks Geo. I'm humbled to think anyone would regard my little program as essential listening or "ideal" radio. I've seen a number of videos lately from Dan O'Day and legends like John Landecker and the message always seems to be the same: Love what you do, or don't do it. I love putting the show together. I love the music. And I'm very lucky to have a PD(Rick Ringer)who let me put this kind of show on the air, and has given me great support and guidance since the show made its debut in May of 2007. I see radio as a source of information (in the form of a newscast including sports and weather with an emphasis on local for all of the above) and music. Musically I like hearing songs that sound good to me that I have never heard before (or if I have don't recognize). What I don't like is having to press my ear to the radio trying to get some lyrics to write down to look up on Google since chances are they won't announce who or what the song was anyway. Of course this is becoming less and less of a problem on radio these days because it is the non-terrestrial radio sources - like Internet radio and that old school Muzak system at work - that play things beyond the standard radio fare we get nowadays. I don't understand how the record labels can have so much rage about illegal downloading hurting sales when the very on-air staff and stations that are SUPPOSED to be helping them get people into new music receive little or no criticism for often not even bothering to say what they played. Having said that I believe that KX96 in Oshawa has a policy of announcing every song they play. More need to be like this. That would be a start.
