I certainly agree with many here that it is distressing to watch what is happening to CFRB. What they need is an "End Run". Something or Somebody that will get Toronto to pay attention. When J. Robert Wood was hired to "fix" 1050 chum in the late '60s, he brought in Big Jack Armstrong. It was as if he had set a bomb off in Toronto Radio. Listeners had never heard anything like him. Suddenly CKFH was no longer The Hippest Station in Town. In '94 when I went into Windsor/Detroit to "fix" AM 800 CKLW, I put Dr. Laura on the air. (we were one of her first stations in syndication) The Word of Mouth was amazing. Listeners had never heard anything like her. Advertisers started to call. Jack left CHUM in less than a year. I lost Laura to WJR Detroit in about the same time. But they did what they were supposed to do. Get people talking about us. They were.....The Outrageous Thing. They also "inspired" everyone around them. And helped Change The Culture. I'm convinced Laura helped me get the many other things that needed to be done much more quickly than I could have otherwise. So...Who or What is CFRB's End Run?

I get the feeling "end run" is a phrase that Astral doesn't know or understand very well. It's probably a good thing if Tory ends up running for Mayor because that will take him off the air gracefully after his 15 minutes of radio fame are over. You have to wonder how many non-broadcasters have worked out on air in talk show host capacity?

So. You want to fix it? Are you willing to spend some $$$$$. I hear Dan Rather is out of work and that his case against CBS was dismissed. He would be a great addition. It would create a lot of buzz,(and, he might make it a year. Just a thought Rick

ummm I hate to say this because I know it will draw howls of outrage...but can talk radio work.... I mean can you imagine if the Leafs came up with the following scenario to win the cup...we'll get Sidney Crosbie on a line...and the other guy on the line will be that fat middle aged guy who post on the SOWNY board, has buckled ankles and never learned to skate when he was a kid... Anyone wanna take bets the Leafs wouldn't win a game...well that's what I am starting to think of talk radio... The only place it seems to kinda work is Cross Country Check Up...don't know if they screen the callers more carefully or if folks who listen to the CBC are brighter... I used to think Jim Richards was a smartass with not a huge amount of talent....then a couple of weeks ago they did a whole stretch where Jim did a couple of interviews without callers...one was with a guy making a documentary about biking in Toronto and the other was with a cyclist who have a gender issue (I can just imagine what Stan and Fran from Ajax would have said about a gender confused cyclist)...Jim was insightful and as good or better than any interviewer on the CBC...thn it was back to the phones and a caller yakked on about how the trouble with so many restaurants in Toronto is they sneak no name ketchup into hienz ketchup bottle...(hmmm no need for upscale places to advertise on 1010...) Richards went to being his smart ass self... I thought no wonder all these hosts on CFRB are miserable...they have to deal with these sort of folks all day... I guess talk radio is cheap...half the talents free...but you get what you pay for

Or something that flagships out of Buffalo or New York and gets picked up here? Also, are you refering to Dan as something good for CFRB? Or Astral coast to coast?

Maybe. Personally, I'd even say most likely. Screen the callers more carefully on CCCU? Yes, they do. Yeah, some bad ones get through, but, you call in, get a screener, talk about what you want to talk about. They call you back when they're ready for you. Or not.
