Received the following e-mail... "Got a new small portable radio.....listening to 550 WGR AM is now a bit difficult...........is 530 BRAMPTON pushing it off....have there been some power adjustments.........? just wondering.......I'm hearing a lot of non-English programming on 550 and it's not WGR........" Anyone know what station that might be?

Yeah, I believe for AM radio there is splatter of +/- 15-25 kHz, although I find it is less so at night. I easily get AM 980 London from 960 right up to 1000 kHz, although at night I get something else on 1000, and it's not CFRB splatter. FM also does the same thing, about +/- 0.3 MHz, although if you're close enough to the transmitter it can be a LOT more - I live very close to high-powered FM transmitters and I've seen splatter as high as +/- 4 MHz.

CFRB 1010 is unlistenable after 6pm down here in the Niagara Region. I'm glad they simulcast the Ryan Doyle Show on CKTB at night.

CFRB has a transmitter site almost to Oakville and a night-time directional pattern that aims at Toronto and doesn't send much power anywhere else. As for CIAO in Brampton, they have a transmitter site South of Georgetown, halfway to the 401. Their daytime pattern favours East, but they are only 1000 watts. At night, they are non-directional with 250 watts.

Whenever I tried to listen to CFRB in Niagara after dark, I got half CFRB and half WINS New York. Unlistenable.

Speaking of transmitters, I find it (slightly) amusing that 590, 640 and 680's transmitters are all in NIAGARA. Broadcasting across the lake works good!

All AM station in Canada are supposed to have their transmitters south of the market they serve and beam the signal north to avoid interfering with American stations on the same channel. It is no coincidence. Click on the "I" in the yellow box on any AM station inthe Canada section of radio-locator.com and then click on the highlighted "view daytime or might time coverage area" for a map. There a few exceptions, but not that many. Not that many AM station sleft either. The rule does not apply for FM, since it is essentially omni-directional.

I was surprised to note several years ago that more and more FM stations are running directional patterns now. Some for obvious reasons like the lower powered campus stations sharing a frequency in Vancouver and Victoria. But, here in Alberta, we are seeing some less obvious reasons. FM's that are licensed to communities surrounding large metros, but are not allowed to serve or sell to those metros. The latest example is the AM to FM flip of CFOK in Westlock, Alberta. They are asking for about 50KW, which they will need to adequately serve both Westlock and Barrhead with a transmitter in the middle. But they have a Figure 8 pattern with a gentle null towards Edmonton. And they seem to go out of their way to point out to the CRTC that even the fringe signal on their coverage map does not reach anywhere near Edmonton.
