So now with the new PPM's in place, what about those who choose to listen to American radio? Are ratings better when the dollar is down? (less people traveling, more desire to listen to local stations, perhaps) Or do they remain pretty much the same? I'm (strictly) guessing that when the dollar is HIGH more people might wish to travel more to the States. Ratings could take a bit of a hit if someone with a PPM switches over to an American station thinking that's where they'll get weather for Buffalo or something. Previously, one could log a Canadian staion in their diary while actually listening to an American station wether it be for short periods of time, or a longer duration.

On a similar note - what if I listen to out of market stations, IE: St. Catherines or Barrie stations, when I'm in my car driving in the GTA?

Same as with the diary system...the station will get credit in the market you're in, not its home market.

I have a few additional questions. What if someone with a PPM device travels out of town for a few days? Does the PPM know they are out of town? What city do the ratings register? What about listening to conventional radio over the Internet?

In Canada, PPM currently is in use in only the three major cities. I don't think there's embedded tone on internet broadcasts because the OTA's who sponsor the ratings agencies don't even like to admit there's such a thing. Same with satellite. I don't know what the situation is in the US.

In the US, internet and satellite streams can all be encoded. Generally, only AM/FM and satellite stations have bothered. There are no internet or satellite stations whose *individual* streams would make the minimum reporting standard, except Howard 100. Since most stations run separate ads on their streams, the internet broadcast is counted on its own, independent of the terrestrial signal. In New York, the streams of WLTW and WHTZ beat a few of the OTA signals.

I can't think of an OTA who isn't streaming PPM dah-tah over their internet stream. The real issue is the mp3 encoding and making sure the data comes out the other end at the computer speakers. Whether someone is listening via a continental transmitter or a Dell the units don't know the difference, nor care. Definitely with AM and office tuning, any OTA who don't encode their off-air stream and ensure data integrity are taking a stupid chance. Especially with such low sample rates, even based on a needle in a haystack math formula, if you get that one person listening via the net with a unit on their belt, you just paid for your entire encoding process .
