Leafs lose in Game 7πŸ‘Ž

Re: Leafs lose in Game 7πŸ‘Ž

My sympathies to Leaf fans for another year of history repeating itself.Β

Turning it back to radio for a second, I turned on 680 News at 6:30 AM the morning after and was stunned by what I heard. Of course, they led with this story, and had all kinds of reaction from players and voicers about how the fans felt.

Here's what they never said: who scored the OT goal, which overtime period it was and perhaps most unforgivably - the final score!

That's basic journalism 101 when it comes to reporting a sports story like this one. It can be argued that if you were interested in the outcome you already knew the disastrous details, but it still should have been one of the first things they outlined other than the loss itself.Β

Sometimes, I have no idea what they're doing over there.Β

Re: Leafs lose in Game 7πŸ‘Ž

To be fair, I listened to their 7 AM cast and this time they got it right. But it wasn't until the second report of the hour that they mentioned the score or who got it. You'd think it would be vital information off the top.Β

At least there’s the PWHL playoffs still to look forward to, and Toronto is hot!

It's a news headline ticker. My expectations are low.

Perhaps. But aside from the first game, this was as good as they've been in a playoff series against a team that fared better than they did during the season, and arguably their toughest opponent. They won 2x on the road and effectively tied this 3rd time before the OT loss. And they came back from a 3-1 deficit to lose in OT. I normally hate the Leafs. But this version has a much shorter list of needed upgrades than previous iterations. I like their backup goaltending more than Samsonov. A little bit of work on defence. And an enforcer with brains who knows how to use that motivational power constructively. The last half of this season was nicely consistent and unlike anything we've seen in years.

Mine aren't, at least not in Toronto. But even the most inexperienced newscaster would have to know giving the final score is a requirement of reporting on any hockey game, especially in the playoffs.

Somewhat interestingly (but not surprisingly,) Rogers chose to air the ABC feed of the game on its own CityTv network - activating a Simsub and ensuring its advertisers got their spots seen regardless of the channel being watched.Β

I noticed that as well.Β  Rogers did the same thing last year.Β  A smart move in my opinion, they paid $5.2 billion for exclusive rights, other than a small package that TSN has during the regular season.Β  Also as you mentioned helpful for their advertisers.Β  Game 6 had 3.4 million viewers on Sportsnet/CBC on Thursday.

ABC's coverage last night was well done what I saw.Β

Imagine someone telling you 10 years ago that, for a Stanley Cup playoff game, "The Sportsnet feed is on CBC and the ABC feed is on CItytv"

Actually it's the curse of the Big M. The Leafs haven't won a cup since they traded Frank Mahovlich. The Big M was traded March 4, 1968, the season after the Leafs won their last cup.Β

Re: Leafs lose in Game 7πŸ‘Ž

Monday is locker clean-out day for the soon-to-be-golfing Leafs and it's a major one for the media, where reporters get to grill the players with the latest 'what went wrong?' interviews. Is this something you'll watch or listen to or is it just more of the same excuses year after year and you're done?

I would imagine both the Fan and TSN1050 will be going strong with this all day, especially considering the alternative is talking about the Blue Jays!

Re: Leafs lose in Game 7πŸ‘Ž

As sad as the Leafs championship drought continues, how would you like to be a Cleveland Indians/Guardians fan. They haven't witnessed a World Series Championship since 1948. Unlike the Leafs, the Cleveland squad managed to make it back in 2016 where they proceeded to blow a 3-1 lead and lose game seven at home, in extra innings to.... the Chicago Cubs which ended their 108 year drought. Now that has really got to hurt.

Tune in to listen to the same old tired cliches, decade after decade? 🀣

Re: Leafs lose in Game 7πŸ‘Ž

I have always joked that radio stations should keep the comments from players while they are still with the team, so they can be recycled each year without the need to go to the after game scrums.
The Leafs lose a game -- just dredge up the players' comments from a few years back and reuse "we didn't execute too well," "we wanted to win, but the other team wanted it more, I guess."Β  "we came to play hockey, and we played hockey, but they just played better hockey than we did."
or conversely, "we had a real good feeling about the game, we figured we could win the game, and we did win the game, now we just have to keep up the momentum and win more games."
Easy.

Re: Leafs lose in Game 7πŸ‘Ž

I heard this on the radio on Monday, although I can't quite remember which station I was listening to.Β

A guy called in to one of the shows lamenting the Game 7 loss, when he related this story. He said he was in the hospital a few years ago when the Leafs lost yet another playoff series in the first round. He saw a guy hanging around the nurses' station getting his pills, when the caller asked him how he was.

"My doctor just confirmed I have the "Big C," he told the stranger. "He advised me to get my affairs in order, because it's terminal."

"Geez," replied the guy telling the story, "I'm so sorry."

"Thanks," was the reply. "I'm putting it in my will that the Leafs are going to act as my pallbearers,"

"Why?" he was asked.

And his final answer was, "I want to make sure they let me down one last time."

Yes I have heard that joke several times with a number of teams that consistently miss the post season entirely or are quickly eliminated from the playoffs every year.
