Posted by Diana on 7/15/2001, 11:35 am Ms. Murphy may have a heart of pure gold for her efforts, the appearance you give is that she hasn't any idea of what she's doing! Secondly, look at the animals she has "saved"! "6 year old gelding that has a level 3 bowed tendon that needs surgery" What is the actual DOLLAR value of this horse, if he had NOT bowed his tendons? And the cost of the surgery will be . . . how much? And he can expect what QUALITY of life afterwards? "8 year old pony that has Navicular and has gone through Accupuncture" at ONLY 8 years old, this pony is looking at possible 30 YEARS of suffering! It sounds to me as if euthanasia would be the merciful solution! WHY make him suffer a living HELL, for YEARS, just so it can be said that he was "SAVED"?! The way I see it, the money used to prolong the suffering of these animals, could be better used for animals that there is a hope for some QUALITY of Life after the "rescue"! Then, you offer chances on saddles, that while the donation was laudable, what's offered at $10 a pop, is almost an insult! These are low quality saddles to start with! I'm sorry if I sound harsh, but when you've rescued as many horses as I have (And I had no outside help!) You see exactly what I'm talking about! Good Luck with your endeavor.
I posted the Saddle Raffle on a few boards...seems a lady feels rescues need the glue factory more than a decent home!!!!!! Her email is listed at the bottom of her post if you'd care to give her your humble option. If you would like the see the original post
from the original board...please email me...........

First off $200 per horse per month?! That's pretty excessive for keeping RESCUE horses.
"20 year old mare that had her eye poked out by bobwire fencing, needed her eye removed that cost the rescue $1,000" Had the eye been diseased, it may have needed to be removed to save the horse's life. (This procedure is quite simple, and should not have cost over $300 tops.) But since the eye was gouged out, the operation was mostly cosmetic in nature. (I've seen many similar cases, where the animals lived 25+ years without the surgery.)
My educated guess, is that he's a $1,800 horse, if he were sound. Needing $2000 worth of surgery (Judging by the cost of the eye removal.) Add to this the $200 per month board for the approximate 6 months to a year recovery time. So you're looking at $3,200-$4,400 NOT counting any additional "adoption fee" for a horse worth $1,800 or less when it's all said and done.
There are horses, that would only need some FOOD to be sound, happy, useful horses again!
But for every equine wreck you keep, a REAL worthy rescue animal ISN'T rescued!
I'd buy 3 chances at $2 each, "just to help out the rescue" KNOWING FULL WELL that I PROBABLY wouldn't win! And IF I did win, I would probably donated it BACK to be auctioned again!
But I'm NOT going to give $10, to a cause who thinks so little of me, that they would auction these cheap saddles AND want $10 each for the "privilege" of helping them!
Don't pee down my back, and tell me "It's raining!"
