Hi Johnny. Nice read your post. You know, Gregg Rolie once said in an interview, "I never get tired of playing BMW-GQ". I think Carlos is the same way. I know Carlos WILL NOT play something he does not wish to play. I've been to Santana concerts where he did not play BMW nor GQ, nor, Oye Como Va, which I think are the most recognized and famous trio medley of songs in the world. I don't think he is contracted or forced to play certain songs to appease the public.
It's too bad you lost interest in the band in the 70's because the 80's was really a fun Santana era. I was a big fan of Brian Auger's Oblivion Express in the 70's and when I heard their album "Second Wind" with Alex Ligertwood on vocals, I thought wow, where did he come from? He's fabulous. Then he joined Santana and I really flipped and really started enjoying the band more and more.
I'd give him another chance because his concerts are really a fun and enlightening experience.
Is he part of "the machine", well, I think needed to be to "touch the young hearts" he wanted to, and get his message of peace, love, joy, and sharing, out to the people. Our troubled world can certainly use a good dose of Santanaism, Santanaology and Santanaitis on a regular basis.
It's good to hear your opinions. Thanks for sharing your insight.
Hermano Scott E
