I couldn't keep my eyes open to finish the staory last night. El Chicano, the stars of the evening. As Gil commented during the show: "This is hot." El Chicano were on fire. An observation and comment I made to Gil was that this band never got credit for their chops. The DVD will finally give El Chicano all the credit they deserve.
It is hard to believe, but the last time this line up played together was over thirty years ago. And it showed in gusto, energy, passion and fire. El Chicano were all business, making every every beat and note count.
The set was in a somewhat album sequencial order. Fred Sanchez -bass; Bobby Espinoza -Hammond B3 and synth; John De Luna -drums; Mickey Lespron -guitar; and sitting in for Andre Baeza, Marcos Reyes -conga, played the earlier part of the set.
Jerry Salas -lead vocals and guitar, and Rudy Regalado brought in as the show progressed to the era where they joined the band. After crowd pleasing numbers like "Tell Her She's Lovely" and "Cayuco" both left the stage and the band regresed to material from the earliest albums. "Viva Tirado" closed the show, and the band was brought back by the audience for two encores.
El Chicano were on fire!
(Oscar Moreno enough took notes to fill a book. I'm waiting for his very detailed review.)
