With Woodstock's 40th anniversary coming up, and all the talk about it, here is a Woodstock related band. Sweetwater is not a name that you right away think about when it comes to Woodstock, probably because they did not make it into the movie or soundtrack. Ask anyone who was the first act to play Woodstock, the answer will be Richie Havens. Ask anyone who was the first band to play Woodstock and they will answer Richie Havens. Well, this gentleman opened the show because the roads leading to the festival were clogged up, and him and his conga player could easily fit in a small helicopter and be flown to the site. Now the truth, who was the first band to play Woodstock? Answer: Sweetwater.
I had the chance to hang out with and talk to original Sweetwater bassist Fred Herrera, and keyboard player Alex Del Zoppo, he made sure that I write Zoppo and not Sapo. Both are very casual and down to earth. They tried to paint the band to me from an East L A perspective, Fred having played with many East L A characters, and Alex still sitting in with East of the L A river musicians. Sweetwater was a band from Echo Park, a community just west of downtown Los Angeles. (There is currently a movement in the arts community to attach Echo Park to East L A.)
Here is a link to the band's website. I want to suggest to you that if you want to get a taste to Sweetwater's sound try places like Lastfm.com or Imeem. I use those as my music research source, of course there is always Youtube.
