After watching a relatively low turn out at a very important Chicano Rock event last week, I decided that I was going to start being part of the solution. The problem with most Chicano Rock / Latin Rock events is the lack of publicity. From now on I will do more than my share to promote events.
Ruben Guevara, in his latest reincarnation as Funkahuatl and The Luvers will be performing at a small but popular Chicano wine and cheese bar in Boyle Heights, the EastsideLuv, a stone throw from the L. A. river. (Truth to tell, I've never seen any cheese at this joint, or wine for that matter) Ruben's band includes Ramon Banda on drums, formerly from Poncho Sanches' band, and along with his brother Tony form part of the Banda Brothers Band; Oingo Boingo's John Avila on bass; Bob Robles from Thee Midniters and Tremoloco on guitar; and college music professor Steve Alaniz, from Lalo and Mark Guerrero, and Cannibal and The Headhunters, on sax. There is usually a very special guest sitting in. Past guests included John Densmore of The Doors, and Steve and Rudy Salas of Tierra.
My two cents. Ruben's gigs at Eastside Luv are on Thursdays. His show doesn't start until past ten. That is a problem for those who have to work the next day. Pero asi, it is still worth it! Los Angeles area people, see you there.
