Thanks PJ, I use two cameras a Nikon D70 with an 18 to 70mm 1:35-4.5 lens, not a great lens though. I like this one because two of several built in settings give me interesting effects, one is for landscapes and gives you deep rich blues and greens; the other one is a setting for night time, it chooses long exposures and gives you warm reds and browns. I don't care the time of day, I switch between them at any time. It also has settings where you can set your own speed, or lens opening. The other camera is a Nikon D300 with an all purpose Nikkor 18-200mm 1:35-5.6 zoom lens. This camera has a mind of its own, you can slightly tweak the speed and the lens opening. What you can do is set your own ISO speed, and play tricks on the camera's computer.
The lighting at this event was very professional, the audience was a big part of the show. What held up the show many times were the empty seats, they kept asking people to fill in those seats, just like in the Academy Awards they have professional seat takers, the cameras never pick up and empty seat, the producer likened an empty seat to a toothless grin. The trick for live concerts is to know what to meter, either expose for the whole frame, or just a spot. I'm a human tripod, can stay pretty still while shooting at low speeds. The camera gives you a chance to change the speed or the f stop, not much. You can tell that I shot at a very slow speed by the blur in the musicians hands. I hardly ever use flash because that is a good way to get yourself kick out, plus it kills the lighting effects.
Do you remember how cool it was when Bruce Steinberg used to drop by and share his time with us? I shared many private emails with him. What impressed me the most was how limited his equipment was, and how great his work turned out. He told me that he wasn't very up to date on digital photography. But still he knew a lot. For Tower of Power's greatest hits cd on Rhyno records he used an inexpensive point and shoot digital camera. He figured out that the size of the picture needed was small, the resolution that he got from that camera was enough. Now that is a master.
I'll post more pictures from this set later. These were not the better pictures.
