The sad news of Michael Jackson's untimely death takes me back to the Summer of 1979. I had graduated from high school, bought my first car, was working a part time job and otherwise just hanging out. At the time my musical interests were confined to edgy, guitar-driven rock and not much else (a lot has changed in thirty years of course). When MJ's Off The Wall lp was released in August '79 I pretty much blew it off as just more disco bs. It wasn't until much later that I came to appreciate how powerful and artistic this music truly was and how nothing could ever surpass its passion, virtuosity, and tight, on-the-one, bad-ass groove. Songs like "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" and "Rock With You" will always get me out on the dance floor taking me back to the analog era of my youth.
Thank you Michael for reminding us that artistry and danceability can go hand in hand.
Rest in peace.
Al
