The great people at eastlarevue.com radio put a nice tribute show for Isaac Avila, who passed away a few weeks ago. The show was put together by my brother Chico Manqueros.
Isaac was a top notch singer and guitarist. He was known for his work as lead singer for the group Tierra in the late nineties and early part of this decade . He was also an associate and collaborator of Sal Rodriguez, War and El Chicano's drummer. Isaac was a leader of his own groups.
Chico Manqueros did a fantastic job at putting together songs from throughout Isaac's career. Chico is the type of programer that choses songs that he knows the general public will enjoy. (We have an inside joke about someone who goes out of his way to find the most obscure and least accessible tracks to play from every album and CD.) There is some unplugged Tierra stuff that I heard for the first time.A cut from the Latin Legends Live CD can be found in there. The numbers from the Sal Rodriguez projects are quite interesting. (There are no samples of this in here, but Sal Rodriguez and Carlos Santana sing identically. Check out El Chicanos Painting the Moment CD.) Many of us were introduced to Ray Barreto's "Ahora Si" via El Chicano's slick and bright cover of it, a version that song is included in this tribute, the cowbell in this song is worth the price of admission. Isaac was more than an accomplished guitar player, the tribute opens with Isaac's guitar on George Benson's "Affirmation."
There are more than a few pleasant surprises as Isaac and the different cover bands that he played with, tear into songs by Chicago, Azteca, and Malo.
Hope that you enjoy this musical tribute to another Latin Rock musician that went ahead before us. Peace.
