Jose Sierra triggered this search. I went on a Mongo Santamaria voyage, had seen this clip many times before, but enjoyed it the best this time around. Of course Mongo Santamaria and Ray Barreto are the highlight in this number, but check out Billy Cobham on trap drums, amazing. Although Nicky Marrero was there on timbales, as well as Roberto Roena on bongos, Billy Cobham shines through among all those fantastic percussionists, he even manages to announce the changes.
Billy Cobham was born in Panama. He produced Pete and Sheila Escovedo, recorded with the Fania All Stars, and was part of the Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin tour. Has he done anything else "Latin?"
It goes without saying that Billy Cobham was one of the fusion masters.
(The guy running around in front of the stage is Jerry Massucci's brother. He is telling the band to stop playing. They put fifty thousand dollars security on Yankee Stadium's field, no one was supposed to walk on it. Fifty grand at the time was a humoungus amount of money.)
