Since basic tracks were laid down way back in the fall of 2015, I guess they're seeing this as a holiday album given the subject matter and didn't release it last year as that was too close to the release of Santana IV (if so, I'd argue that point, given how much the industry has changed. In the past, you definitely didn't want to release albums that close together for fear of cannibalizing sales, but now your sales fall off a cliff after the first few weeks anyway. The days of any album sitting in the top ten for a year propelled by a succession of singles are gone and sadly never coming back).
Anyway, aside from what we previously knew - that the album is all covers and will kick off with "God Bless the Child" and end with "Let There Be Peace on Earth" (featuring congas, Carlos promises)...
...as well as Carlos' third studio take on "Gypsy Woman" (though the three were recorded over a span of nearly thirty years and the last one was a George Clinton version that Carlos played on as a guest)...
...songs will include "Love, Peace and Happiness" which has been featured in Santana's live set for years.
Plus "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)," "I Just Want to Make Love to You," "It Don't Make Sense (You Can't Make Peace)," "What the World Needs Now Is Love," and "Higher Ground."
There should be six or seven more, going by previous references to 15 or 16 tracks.
It should be an interesting listen - while there won't be any instrumentals (apparently), the fact that it's a reasonably stable lineup and the few "guests" are guys like Eddie Levert and Greg Phillinganes has me hopeful.
Now if they could just make that Mega Nova album happen...
