POWER OF PEACE - SHORT REVIEW
Apparently Carlos was much taken by Ronnie Isley's recording of Bacharach classic songs and TV special...this CD falls awkwardly between that type of late - night serenade style jazz ballads and more clunky, stanky rock - funk. Driven along by Cindy's heavy and forceful drumming. Ernie Isley does not burn perhaps as much as he should on these cuts. Ernie is relegated more to rhytmn playing. Carlos' playing is a set of dimishing returns.
The intro to GYPSY WOMAN, is glorious though - and is also the longest cut on the CD. This was also covered on the earlier Santana CD - Spirits Dancing In The Flesh.
HIGHER GROUND (effectively slowed down to a raunchier grind) features a very dated rap by Andy Vargas - similar to the not quite right raps of son Salvador Santana. ("Get yo hands in da air - like u just don care" type of malarkey??)
There are sweet spot moments and the recording is swamped by Carlos dramatic Wah Wah playing; and flavours his inimitable use of the pedal.
Marvin's MERCY MERCY ME is a creditable version and sticks faithfully to the original - including the wondrous celestial coda.
The Cindy sung ballad is pretty decent (I REMEMBER) and has a ethereal melancholy edge. GOD BLESS THE CHILD is taken in a different direction and is refreshing for this change and build up in feel.
I wish Carlos had let the original Santana stretch out a lot more and dig deeper into that fascinating chemistry. But he seems to be on (bucket list?) quest to cover as many bases as soon as possible.
There is something missing thoughout - its great that Carlos has the energy to go in and cut the CDs in four days, but somehow it lacks cohesion.
Time is running out and his life (like all of ours) Is speeding up.
But perhaps the mooted Rick Rubin material will bring a new lease of life.
I dont see this CD being a long time favourite for me ......
In his haste to maybe cover lots of music now, I feel Carlos is overlooking the obvious!
