The problem is that fetish, by dictionary definition is "An object of unreasonably excessive attention or reverence" (that is the most g-rated of all definitions at dictionary.com). This definies an Asian NOT as a person, NOT as a human being, but as an object. If it was a celebration of ethnicity, it would encourage one to study the historical contributions of Asian or Asian Americans. This has nothing to do with a celebration of my ethnicity; it encourages others to dress as what they think an Asian is, and exploit it in the name of sexual gratification.
Imagine, for instance, if there was an African American fetish night, where people were encouraged to wear hip-hop syle outfits, curly wigs, and dark make-up to imitate their interpretations of that ethnicity based on the media. Would this be seen as a celebration of their culture? No. It would be seen as being in poor taste.
However, because of the recent fascination with Asian culture in the U.S., it is somehow seen as politically correct and flattering to make up some pretend form of geisha/samurai, and call it a "fetish".
Again, I would have no problem if the night focused primarily on "Anime fetish", as Anime characters are objects. However, saying that an Asian fetish night is a celebration of ethnicity sounds pretty twisted to me.

: Another perspective would be a
: celebration of your ethnicity,
: something to be proud of.
: Respect.
