The building that houses Area 51 used to be a bar called the Barb Wire, and I'm sure a bunch of other things. Sanctuary was the name of the club on some flyers before the official opening when the owner decided to call it Area 51. Area 51 officially opened August of 1998 with one dance floor. By November of 1998, the top floor was done and downstairs had the goth/industrial nights with the 80's, techno and modern music upstairs. In August 2001, A51's owner began leasing the building at 740 S. 300 W. and called it Club Sanctuary. The downstairs goth/industrial nights moved from Area 51 to that building during its tenure. The property was foreclosed from the club's landlord and the bank sold the building in 2004. That building was originally a mormon church. It had also been other clubs: Pompadour, Fusion, Club @, Confusion. It is now a Buddhist temple. Goth/industrial nights were moved back to downstairs at Area 51.
