If smoking isn't a pleasure, why bother?
Posted by Freedom Matters on April 20, 2007, 11:39:38 ...the anti-smoking forces need a quick reality check. Most smokers I know will often check the vicinity if they're not in a smoking area before firing up. For the few that don't, I'm not sure that trying to legislate their behaviour is warranted. If that logic was universally valid, a) children wouldn't be allowed on overseas flights, b) cell phones wouldn't be free to use in public venues, and God forbid, Spandex in Walmart for the average Sunday night crowd! For instance - should we establish a moratorium on teens in malls because some of them cuss loudly with an utter disregard for the families walking near them? Highly unpleasant behaviour...but actionable? Especially when the public airwaves are rife with far worse invective? What I'm driving at is a bit of tolerance allows a very wide range of freedoms to remain for the great majority of people who don't abuse them. If we continue targeting specific unpleasant behaviors for legislative action, we will all eventually wind up losing much more than what we bargained for. Kind of like asking a genie to end all war forever....and the Genie waves his hand and removes humanity. Hey. Problem solved. Same with freedom and choice. Freedom and choice are inextricably linked (outside the criminal acts of course)...remove choice, no freedom. That includes the choice to do something that some others don't like. Freedom takes a lot of hard work and courage to maintain, however, hiding behind the skirts of the most convenient rent-a-saviour seems to be the order of the day. Link: http://7valleys.franbest.com/
