If smoking isn't a pleasure, why bother?
Posted by Pat Cahill on February 11, 2004, 11:13:47 Theres a frenetic pace to all this activity, but elegance too as if theyve rehearsed these activities a thousand times; they probably have! Their cigarettes are held aloft femininely between their fingers with wisps of smoke drifting from them between inhales. Theres every sort of style on display but few less than perfect and all performed unselfconsciously. Many wear wedding rings and I sometimes wonder what role their sexy smoking may have played in their quest for the husband of their choice. They may have practised their style with courtship in mind but now its second nature to them. All of this will be a thing of the past within a few short weeks. These bars with their dark wood matching the business suits of their women smoking customers will at once lose their fascination and delight to those of us who enjoy sightings of sexy women smoking indoors. Does anybody else have tales to tell of cafes and bars in the weeks leading up to the introduction of prohibitions on public smoking, whether in places such as New York where the ban is already in place or in Ireland where its about to happen. These sightings will be a treasure store of memories from which to draw in the future.

In Ireland were living in the last weeks of indoor sightings before the ban. One of my favourite things is to go to a specific café-bar, in the city where I live at eleven oclock in the morning. Its called the Gingerman and mid morning is the time when the sexy women lawyers, accountants and office workers in their twenties and early thirties gather to have tea or coffee, buns and sandwiches. More importantly however, they bring out their packs of Marlboro Lights, Silk Cut, or perhaps stronger type cigarettes such as Benson and Hedges in their distinctive gold-coloured packs.
They are all so pleased and relieved to have a break from their work and they come in pairs to talk to each other about their skiing trips with their husbands or partners, drink their beverages and feed their lungs and stomachs. Some cant wait for a cigarette, and have one before their food and coffees have arrived. Some arent so needy for nicotine and wait until theyve finished eating; perhaps instead its because theyre so engrossed in conversation, that theyre craving is temporarily suppressed. However theyve placed their packs on their tables so I know whats to follow. I suppose they have the comfort of knowing that their elegant white cylindrical friends are there ready when they need them.
