I guess were all waiting on Ice to give us the official "there's waves, go surfing" call. We all rely so heavily on Ice's forecasts, that I for one have charged 8 hour trips solely on his testimony. I can never say that he has led me a stray or made the wrong call, but isn't it time for others to shine? No one doubts Ice's weather prowness, and he will always be the top-dog weather guru in my mind, but haven't we learned enough that we can now talk amoungst ourselves and figure out whats going to happen? Yes of course he has the multi-million dollar equipment behind him, but that really aids in long term forecasts. We all have the tools, (thanks to Grieg and Stafford), to have a general idea of swell height, direction, period, wind speeds and wind direction one or two days before the swell hits. Do you really need more time then that? Now I admit when hurricane season rolls around Ice can tell ya where to be,when to be there, and what to be riding, but how many of us really don't know when there are going to be waves in our area? Now I know I am going to get burned at the stake for this, this is nothing against Ice, and I personally suck at wave prediction. I just want us to grow as a surfing community and let some of our other up and coming forecasters, like MPT and the guy who Ice inspired to go to Meterology school, step into the lime light. Ice will always be there to let us know if our predictions are leading people astray. The bottom line is that if Ice keeps feeding us so much we're going to get fat and lazy and when Swell.com scoops him up and starts charging us, we're all going to be left holding the bag. Who is going to step up if that happens? Ice you know I love you, and this is nothing against you, so everyone please don't key my car.
