What's interesting about Bassey is that she is a 'crossover' artist for most of her fans. Their tastes will be concentrated in one area and then Bassey makes it in.
Belters like Judy Garland and Eydie Gorme AND Bassey
Broadway belters like Streisand and Liza AND Bassey
Yowlers like Freddie Mercury and Robert Plant AND Bassey.
Soul divas like Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight AND Bassey
Crooners like Sinatra and Peggy Lee AND Bassey.
Pop divas like Diana Ross and Cher AND Bassey.
60s Pop singers like Vikki Carr and Petula Clark AND Bassey
Powerhouse singers like Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey AND Bassey
Jazz singers like Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald AND Bassey.
No matter what audience she is exposed to she makes an incredible impression. It says something about the enormity of her talent. Unlike her peers, she made this impression without the benefit of hit singles (outside of the U.K.) or multi-platinum albums or awards. With 'The Performance' I think she becomes more contemporary than some of her much younger peers. Just the idea that she has found her way to be mentioned as a favorite alongside much more ubiquitous and 'famous' singers like Sinatra or Billie Holiday or Freddie Mercury is an accolade in itself. And proof that her uniquely powerful voice is appreciated across a wide spectrum of music.
