Well, I guess part of it might be that if you were to promote an album worldwide with TV and radio interviews, personal appearances etc. you'd have to stagger the release dates over, at minimum, a few weeks so that your appearances in the respective countries/continents coincided with the release in that area. No good releasing in, say, Japan if youre doing the telly in Shepherds Bush that week!
