Agree, Erick, that "The Performance" was an artistic peak for DSB. Not her best recording -- some of the songs are trite -- but as an artist DSB was at her most formidable. Beyond her years of loud vocal blasts and long bellowing sustains, she had to dig into the songs and breathe life into them with her interpretive gifts. She did that with uncharacteristic restraint but dramatically and with an emotive power she'd been cultivating for more than 50 years. "Girl From Tiger Bay", "This Time", "Almost There" and "The Performance Of My Life" are among the most affecting recordings of her long career. It is a profound shame that the CD was not better promoted/received because it featured some of her best work as a recording artist.
