I am closted to most, but I'm slowly becoming less of one(thankfully!). I smoked in front of my brother for the first time last night in a bar that permitted smoking(yay to the fact I'm on vacation outside of Illinois!), plus recently got around to admitting to a female friend of mine that I smoke socially(which is in actuality true, and didn't lie to her about how much I smoke). BTW, this was the same friend I posted about in a question I made here in April(and wanna again greatly thank Blbear2000 and Michael for their responces, in case they are reading this post).
That aside(plus my giddiness there about my recent achievements, lol), the major reason I stay closted to some is that they have a negative opinion on smoking. However, I've increasingly realized that I heavily overreacted by not admitting my smoking to them, and recently realizing that most non-smokers(other than anti-smokers) don't care either way if you smoke or not.
Of course too, not gonna kid anyone that I can't wait for the day when I finally can live on my own, and not have my dad often making insults or mean-spirited jokes about the fact I smoke(luckily, OTOH, my mom doesn't care that I smoke, though she's a non-smoker). Also, I'm all but certain this is thanks to the fact my grandfather was a smoker for most of his life other than the last 10 years of his life(and I'm sure often did so in front of my dad, though he passed away a few years before I was born.

: I have been a closeted f#*k for 30 years now.
:
: In a way I love it, it is my little secret
: (difficult as heck sometimes though)...
:
: On the other hand, I would so love to
: smoke freely like any other smokers...sigh.
: I know for a fact that the reason I am in
: the closet is my parents, who are majorly
: intolerant of smoking and would 'die' if
: they knew - both smoked before years before
: quitting when I was little - now they both
: live 500 miles away and I see maybe twice a
: year!!!
:
: Thing is, everyone in my life knows me as a
: non-smoker, especially my wife (!!!).
:
: It is so much a part of my 'self image' -
: being a non-smoker, I could never be
: anything else (publicly to my friends and
: family, that is).
:
: Like many, I smoke freely when away from
: folks I know. I live in a large enough city
: that that is not a big problem at all to
: smoke daily like this, walking around in the
: day, at school, easy to get away with.
:
: What a life huh?
:
: Talk to me.
: Any of you have similar circumstances?
: Does anyone relate to me?
:
: I could never come out, too many people
: would be blown away.
: You don't just 'start smoking' out of the
: blue at 45 years old - ya know?
: Arrrgghh.
