From my experience in a cruise ship a couple of years ago, I'd say definitely bring a Zippo with you. Ordinary lighters won't work with the wind whipping around you out on the deck.
I always used a Zippo, so of course I had it with me on the ship. Anywhere I went to smoke outside, I was approached by a number of smokers whose lighters were useless.

: While taking a cruise can be a very pleasant
: way to vacation, given all of the shipboard
: amenities and the diverse variety of shore
: excursions available--they are not very
: hospitable to those of us who smoke. My
: wife and I recently took a Holland-America
: cruise to Alaska. We are both off and on
: closet smokers--me with cigars and pipes and
: my wife cigarrettes of course. The ship had
: smoking restricted to certain onboard
: cocktail lounges and the casino and only
: cigarettes were allowed. Tobacco consumption
: in any other form was limited to the decks.
: AND I guess more than anything we were
: caught by surprise in not realising AK in
: Sept is cold wet and rainy. I did manage to
: make the best of it by trying to enjoy my
: wife's VS menthols (indoors) and also smoked
: an occasional cigar while ashore. Are there
: any other smoking experiences with the
: cruise ship scene? I would like to think
: that other cruise lines may be more
: accommodating, but probably not if the ships
: are regulated similar to the airlines.
