What ever happened to civility? If I met someone with an odor, I wouldn't broadcast it aloud or try to stir up a contrversy. If I were really so offended, I think I would say something privately to the other party. The DMV clerk in your story was out of oder.

: My wife is a regular smoker who enjoys her
: habit (as I do) and over the years that we
: have been together she has been fairly
: skillful in dealing with abrasive comments
: from nonsmokers--until recently, she left
: work early to stop at the DMV office to
: renew her driver's license. As the local
: office near our home is some distance from
: her workplace, she had two cigarettes during
: the drive.
: She arrived at the office smelling of smoke,
: went into the DMV and even though the office
: was somewhat crowded she didn't have to wait
: long.
: A young African-American male waited on her,
: while preparing the paperwork for her
: renewal request, made an utterance within
: earshot about her Ashtray breath being the
: pits. While wishing to avoid a scene, my
: wife bit her tongue and said nothing. To say
: the least this experience angered her and
: she believes that smokers are the last
: minority that it is permissible to oppress
: with the blessings of government. I did call
: this DMV office to protest my wife's
: treatment and got what I would call a luke
: warm response. Has anyone else had any
: experiences with discourteous, ill-mannered
: nonsmokers?
