I wish I saw (or tasted) what others do in Marlboro Reds. I tried Reds many times over the years. Once in a blue moon I'd get a pack (or even a carton, a couple of times) that lived up to their slogan about flavor--and when that was the case, I admit, I couldn't get enough of 'em. The amount I smoked would easily double or triple at those times, and I could see why Marlboro is so popular.
Most of the time, however, I personally find Marlboro Reds to be of poor quality and horrible taste--at least where I live. Alone of the premium brands, they often seem to be filled with nothing except reconstituted sheet tobacco (looks like little flakes of cardboard) and chunks of woody-looking stems and leaf spines. The result is a cigarette that tastes so foul that they've actually made me gag--and since I've been a smoker for almost 21 years, it's definitely not because of inexperience.
Outside of the tobacco blend itself, the way these bad-tasting Reds burn seems indicative of the poor quality: Instead of producing a nice, cohesive, white ash the way all of the best cigarettes I've smoked do, Reds often burn to a glistening, coal black mass that appears disturbingly similar to plastic that's fallen onto the heating element in a dishwasher.
I say all of this not to contradict you, "myself", but out of frustration. Perhaps it's that the Marlboro Reds sold at stores here are of particularly low quality for some unknown reason (oddly, the times I've really enjoyed Reds, I've always purchased them out-of-state). Or perhaps it's just a quirk of mine. In any case, taste is DEFINITELY as important a factor for me as nicotine--and that doesn't seem to be true of a lot of smokers. There's no denying that I find it very unpleasant to go without nicotine, but I will do just that rather than smoke a horrible-tasting cigarette to satisfy a craving. We'll be getting the so-called "fire-safe" cigarettes in Louisiana by the end of the summer--and based on everything I've heard I fully expect them to be so bad that I will have to contemplate quitting altogether. But in the meantime, and for all these many years I've occasionally given them a chance, I wish that the Marlboro Reds I purchase here could actually live up to their reputation, at least most of the time.
