I'm not sure I would ever encourage someone to start smoking. I started when I was still young enough not to fully understand the implications of starting such a difficult habit to break. Once I did start, being a closet smoker was really my only option due to still being in high school at the time. As I got older, though, I was never really able to come out to the world as a smoker. At times I wish I had never started, at other times, though, I do look at is as a source of pleasure.
As for where I usually smoke, I would have to say mostly in my car and on our patio at home. My husband quit a few years ago and he is pretty tolerant of my smoking, though I almost never do it around him. I've only really come out to a handful of people over the years- my husband (obviously), a few friends, and some coworkers who also smoked.
I imagine it would be difficult to suddenly start at your age- I was a lot younger when I started.
