I've not been in the same situation--but I sure as hell wish I had been! To me, this is a no-brainer; as smokers, even if your parents are upset at first they will still be very likely to understand at a fundamental level. After all, both of them at some point did what you are contemplating doing. And maybe even more than all that, because they are both smokers they know that nagging and guilt trips and all that stuff aren't going to work.
I'd give up a great deal for the chance to step into a time machine and relive the period during and for a couple of years after I became a regular smoker--and most especially to relive it in a family situation similar to the one you describe.
That may sound like a selfish answer, but I have no doubt that if you open that closet door and have this conversation now, you'll benefit from it in ways you're not even considering yet.
