Yep, as Patrick said, the policy on lighters has been changed for a while now. Since 2007 to be precise. Here's the official word if you want to see something official: http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/sop/index.shtm
Just FWIW though, before the policy was changed, I'd just leave my Zippo at home when I flew and put a small Bic into a side pocket of my carry-on. If they'd ever found it, nothing much would have happened--they'd simply have confiscated it and added it to the huge mountain of other lighters. But judging by the dozens of other smokers I saw using their own lighters in airport smoking areas during the ban, a very large number of people were getting lighters past security during the whole time it was in place.
Still, I'm glad they lifted the ban. I love my Zippo--I've had it for just shy of 20 years, and can't count the number of times it worked in windy conditions when cheapo butane lighters weren't worth a damn. (Hint: If you ever go on a cruise, you will probably NEED a Zippo--and if the other smokers find out you have one, you will never lack for friendly conversation with strangers while you're aboard.
