I've tried what you described...leaving my cigarettes around in view and not going to extrarodinary lengths to hide the smell. In my case, it simply didn't work. My parents knew I was smoking but they didn't say anything. They won't say anything because they really can't since they smoke. They also understand. If you just tell them, they'll deal with it easy enough...trust me. It's like pulling off a bandage...hurts at first but soon goes away. It'll feel odd at first when you tell them you smoke and then smoke around them, but the oddness of it goes away very fast. Just remember, they went through the same thing with their parents when they started smoking. They'll deal with it OK.
